Two skeletons from Middle Ages found at the Grote Markt – The Northern Times
Two skeletons from the Middle Ages were found during archaeological excavations on the north side of the Grote Markt.
In a statement on Tuesday, the municipality of Groningen said one of the skeletons was found in a wooden box and the other in a hollowed-out tree trunk.
The two skeletons are being secured and rendered safe for research which could reveal the precise age and gender of the skeletons.
According to the municipality, prior to the construction of the Martinichurch (Martinikerk) a wooden church stood at the Grote Markt. This earlier church also included a cemetery.
