On May 4, 2023, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky visited the International Criminal Court (ICC) and was greeted by ICC Judge Pyotr Hoffmansky and ICC Registrar Osvald Zavala Giller.
President Hoffmansky briefed President Zelensky on the current activities of the ICC. This activity spans 16 situational countries on 4 continents and he has 4 ongoing trials. He emphasized the independence and impartiality of the Court as a judicial body empowered to deal with the most serious crimes under international law.
The ICC announced in March that it had issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. He is responsible for illegally deporting children and transferring them from Ukrainian territory to Russia.
President Zelensky thanked the ICC for its role in providing justice to Ukraine and contributing to the rule of law around the world.
Volodymyr Zelensky also met with King Willem-Alexander, Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Defense Minister Kaisa Oronguren before returning to Ukraine.
