gutsIt stands for Groningen University Theater Association and is connected to the Department of English and Culture within the Faculty of Arts. The group presents English-language plays and has been presenting theater productions since 1968.
GUTS secretary Bram van Beek told Dagblad that it has received other offers for performance spaces in the region.
The decision was made not to perform international attentionUsva, a student cultural and performing arts center associated with the University of Groningen, refused to host the play because women were not allowed to audition.
It was Beckett herself who prevented women from being considered for the role. Irish playwright Samuel Beckett wrote the play Absurd in 1953, stipulating that only male actors could play the part.
On Monday, February 13th, the students released a statement on Instagram about their work receiving media attention.
“Inclusivity is very important to GUTS. It has become a staple of the association,” read the statement.[Gender-swapping and same-sex attraction] It’s what makes theater interesting and inclusive for everyone who loves it. ”
“We are concerned that GUTS is being associated by the media with things we disagree with, in whole or in part,” the statement continued. Rather, we want to make it clear that we want to provide a platform where we can promote all types of theater with a passion for theater.
In 1988, Beckett’s objections were met when another Dutch theater company planned to stage a famous play exclusively for women. Since Beckett’s death in 1989, his estate has carefully respected his wishes and refused to allow plays involving non-male characters in the cast.
according to GuardianBeckett objected to having a woman play the role, saying that women do not have prostates. It is implied (but not explicitly stated) that this is due to the need to urinate more frequently due to a common problem faced by older men – an enlarged prostate.
