Christmas tree lights on Grote Markt destroyed by vandals – Northern Times

Groningen City Club’s Louis van der Thuyn said he was left “disgusted” and “sad” after an unidentified vandal tried to kill the Christmas spirit and damaged the city’s beloved tree.

Van der Thuyn, who decorates the market square with Nordmann firs every year, says: RTV North We have confirmed that the light does not work due to damage. “It’s indescribable,” he said. “Each string of lights went out. Most of the time it’s by the bulb, so it can’t be fixed.”

The tree on the Grote Markt was lit up on the night of December 8th. The 22-meter-tall Nordmann was donated by the Haren family.

Three weeks after it was lit up for the Christmas season, the city’s long-standing holiday tradition, residents were angry that the tree was in the dark.

Van der Tuin said the vandalism caused hundreds of euros in damage. “I don’t understand why anyone would do such a thing. It was such a beautiful tree that we were so proud of it.”

Efforts are underway to rewire at least part of the tree, but it remained dark as of Thursday.
