Feyenoord take first place in group with impressive victory over Lazio

Feyenoord scored a shock victory over Lazio to advance to the next round top of their Europa League group. The Rotterdam club were bottom at half-time with De He Cuype before Santiago his Jiménez winner overturned the whole group in the second half.

Feyenoord knew before the match they were out of their hands. Manager Arne Slott argued that Feyenoord should focus on beating Lazio. The Rotterdamers knew a third-place finish meant conference league football next season. He named Igor Paixiao in the line-up, giving the winger his first start for the club.

Feyenoord got their first chance within a minute. Lazio defender Patrick slipped the ball and Danilo picked it up, but the Brazilian didn’t get a good shot and spread the ball wide.

Lazio got their first chance after the Feyenoord centre-back made two mistakes, giving Felipe Andersen a lot of space. He threw the ball to Castelli, but Castelli’s shot went outside the goal.

News has broken out that FC Midtjyllan are leading Sturm Graz in the other matches in this group. This meant that at half time Feyenoord were bottom of the group and indicated they would be knocked out of all European football.

Anderson broke in behind the Feyenoord defense, again due to a Feyenoord error. Jabarro Dilozan this time sent the Brazilian in with a selfish pass, but Bijiro was able to save from the winger.

Feyenoord broke the deadlock in the 64th minute. Santiago Jimenez scored his third goal in his two games against Lazio. After receiving the ball, the Mexican helped goalkeeper Yvan Probeder go down after being hit by his own teammate. Jimenez was then able to drive the ball into an empty net. The goal was checked and awarded by VAR official Sebastian Dunkert.

71 minutes into the match, Orkun Kokcü’s trademark long-range shot hit the post. Lazio were toothless throughout the match, and despite a desperate cross in the closing minutes, the Romans were unable to trouble Feyenoord.

Frustration reached a boiling point for substitute Luca Romero, who was sent off with two cautions within a minute. After complaining to the referee and getting a warning, the winger kicked the ball away 30 seconds after him and received a second yellow, capping off a disastrous night for Lazio.

This is a great achievement for Arne Slot and his men, who knocked out a much better-performing team in Lazio. The Rotterdam club will wait for Monday’s knockout stage draw to find their next opponents in this season’s Europa League. Lazio play in the conference league.
