How to Take Care of Purple Stem

When growing cannabis, there is a lot that can go wrong. New growers will find the changes in their plants through each stage of growth can sometimes lead to stress. A common issue with some types of cannabis is purple stem. It is important growers understand what this means and how they can take care of their plants.

What Is Purple Stem?

If a cannabis plant develops a purple stem, there is no need to panic right away. Purple stems can range from a color of slight purplish to a deep, dark purple. When this color develops in a marijuana plant stem, growers need to know the possible reasons so they can address the issues right away.

What Causes Purple Stem?

There are two possible reasons that can lead to purple stem in a cannabis plant. Some strains naturally have purple stems. Strains like Granddaddy Purple, Purple Urkle, and Purple Haze all have a purplish or bluish color instead of the expected green of many other marijuana strains. When growing a cannabis strain, it is important to research it carefully and determine what the plant will look like in different stages of growth so there is no panic.

Another cause for purple stem to develop in cannabis plants is nutrient deficiency. If a person is not growing a cannabis strain that develops into a purple color and they notice a purple tint begin to occur in their stems, it is time to check for signs of nutrient deficiency.

One of the most common reasons for purple stem development outside of genetics is magnesium deficiency. In addition to purple stem, a magnesium deficiency will also cause the following signs.

  • The leaves of the marijuana plant will begin to take on a yellowish tinge.
  • If a plant is magnesium deficient, the leaves will soon begin to turn a blackish-red color.

If the above signs are occurring, growers will know they have a deficiency of magnesium that needs to be addressed. Usually, these nutrient deficiencies are fairly easy to address, and plants begin to recover quickly.

How to Fix Purple Stem Caused By Nutrient Issues

If there is a lack of magnesium to blame, growers need to know the steps involved in overcoming this issue and getting their marijuana plants healthy again. All a grower needs to do is mix some magnesium sulfate with water and spray it on the leaves. The plant will absorb the magnesium through the leaves and begin to slowly turn green again in the stems.

Growers should use this spray mixture every three days until the issue is resolved. Monitoring the color changes in the leaves and stems will let a grower know when their plants have been given enough nutrients.

In addition to lacking magnesium themselves, plants can also develop purple stem issues related to magnesium because of the pH of the soil. If the pH balance is off with the soil, the plant will not be able to take in nutrients efficiently, which will result in a magnesium deficiency. Ideally, the pH of the soil should be between 6.0 and 6.5 for the best nutrient uptake.

Taking Care Of Purple Stem Is Not a Problem

Growers should not panic when they see their marijuana plants developing a purple stem. First, check to see if the plant is a strain that is naturally prone to having a purple color. If not, individuals should check for signs of magnesium deficiency or problems with the pH levels in the soil. With care, individuals will be able to grow cannabis plants successfully.
