Last year, 73 people drowned in the Netherlands, most of them over the age of 60.

Last year, 73 residents in the Netherlands died from drowning in open water or accidents in or around their homes. That’s seven fewer than a year ago and well below the average of 86 over the past decade, CBS reported on Tuesday. Most of the victims were over the age of 60.

Over the years, the elderly have been by far the most common accidental drowning deaths. Over the past decade, 45% of his accidental drownings involved people over the age of 60. Toddlers under the age of 10 are her second-highest group of deaths from drowning, with him at 8% over the past decade.

Seventy-four percent of accidental drowning deaths in the last decade occurred in open water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ditches and oceans. 20% occurred in and around the home, such as in the bathtub.

Between 2013 and 2022, 125 Dutch residents under the age of 20 drowned. Among them were 29 young people not born in the Netherlands, five born elsewhere in Europe and 24 born outside Europe. “On conversion, the latter figure equates to about 10 more drownings per 1,000 inhabitants among young people born outside of Europe than among those from the Netherlands,” CBS said. Infants born in the Netherlands to parents who immigrated to the Netherlands from outside Europe have a three times higher risk of drowning.

CBS also documented suicides and drownings due to traffic accidents separately. Last year, 100 people drowned by suicide, and 39 people drowned after falling into the water in car accidents, mostly from cars and bicycles hitting the water.

“Across all causes of drowning, victims are more likely to be male (70%) than female, and are overwhelmingly more likely to be over the age of 50 (65%),” CBS said.
