Tens of millions of American crayfish are damaging waterways in the southern Netherlands’ Krimpenerwaard region, and experts are calling on Agriculture Minister Piet Adema to take swift and decisive action against the invasive species.

The crayfish – Procambarus clarkii, or red marsh crayfish – is thought to have migrated from its native United States in the ballast tanks of large freighters and is well adapted to local waterways. They are especially common in Utrecht, North Holland and South Holland.

Animals are pests and are considered a threat to aquatic flora and fauna. They also burrow along the banks of the ditch that crosses the Krimpenerwaard. This weakens the land and poses a danger to cattle.

‘The waterway is now quiet and lifeless,’ says local organization letter He called for a “large-scale, sustainable and organized” approach to the problem.

In 2016, professional fishermen were allowed to fish for crawfish commercially, but this, combined with local efforts to catch as many as possible, has proven unmatched by the animals’ “explosive” breeding rates. it was done.
