The 2026/27 Eredivisie season kicked off on 7 August 2026, with PSV Eindhoven entering as three-time defending champions after a dominant 2025/26 campaign in which they finished top with 84 points, 19 clear of second-placed Feyenoord. A quarter of the way into the new season, the early picture suggests PSV’s dominance isn’t fading — but Feyenoord isn’t going quietly either.
PSV’s fast start
PSV opened the season with a statement result, beating Groningen 5–1 at home on 23 August, and have carried that form through the opening weeks, putting together one of the league’s longest unbeaten runs so far this season alongside AZ. Their attacking depth — the same quality that carried them to last season’s title — has continued to show up early, with a 6–1 win away at Utrecht among their results.
Feyenoord’s response
Feyenoord haven’t been shy about responding. Their away trip to PEC Zwolle produced the season’s biggest away win so far, a 7–0 result on 13 September, and an earlier 5–2 win at Cambuur in August signalled that last season’s runners-up intend to press PSV rather than settle for second again. With both PSV and Feyenoord among the teams on the league’s longest unbeaten runs early on, the title race is shaping up as a genuine two-way contest, at least for now.
Who else is in the mix
NEC Nijmegen, who finished third last season, opened this campaign with a hard-fought draw against Feyenoord and remain a side built on defensive discipline and counter-attacking football — a style that has historically frustrated possession-based opponents like Feyenoord. AZ Alkmaar, alongside PSV, share the league’s longest winning run of the season so far (five matches), making them an early dark horse worth watching in the race for European qualification spots even if the title looks like a two-team fight.
The bottom of the table
At the other end, this season’s promoted sides — ADO Den Haag, Cambuur, and Willem II, all returning to the Eredivisie after multi-year absences — face the usual test of adapting to the top flight. Cambuur have had the league’s longest losing run so far (four matches), a reminder of how difficult the step up from the Eerste Divisie can be even after a promotion-winning campaign.
Top scorers early on
The race for this season’s top scorer is wide open, with Gjivai Zechiël, Søren Tengstedt, and Artem Stepanov tied on five goals each in the opening weeks — a different leaderboard than last season’s, when Feyenoord’s Ayase Ueda ran away with the golden boot on 25 goals.
