University of Groningen Library quits Twitter – The Northern Times

The University of Groningen Library (UB) is quitting the social media platform Twitter and is moving to Mastodon.

In a statement, the library said that recent developments on Twitter (now officially called X) do not align with its core values.

“The UB stands for trustworthy information provision and is committed to open science. We want to promote open principles in our communication strategy as well,” the library said.

The library did not specify which “recent developments” it was referring to.

Its final day on Twitter is expected to be Friday 20th October. After 14 years on the platform, the library had amassed 2,689 followers. On Mastodon that number stands at 956.

Mastodon is a microblogging platform that shares a number of similarities with Twitter.

Criticism about Twitter grew after its takeover by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Now Musk is reportedly considering removing the service from the EU in response to a new internet platform regulation in the region, according to Insider.

The EU recently issued a warning to Musk over alleged disinformation about the Hamas attack on Israel, including fake news and “repurposed old images” onTwitter.
