According to research conducted by NOS, despite efforts by social media platforms to combat hackers, criminals still find it relatively easy to infiltrate Instagram, Facebook, and email accounts. The investigation tracked the operations of a Nigerian phishing syndicate, revealing a staggering 3,200 victims, including 1,000 in the Netherlands alone. However, these figures likely represent only a fraction of the actual number of compromised accounts, highlighting the magnitude of the issue.

The modus operandi of the gang involves luring unsuspecting individuals to counterfeit login pages, where they unwittingly surrender their credentials. Subsequently, the criminals seize control by altering the account passwords, effectively locking out the rightful owners. While approximately a third of the identified victims hail from the Netherlands, it remains unclear whether the syndicate specifically targets Dutch users.

Notably, internet safety expert Matthijs Koot underscores the rudimentary nature of these cyber-attacks, dispelling the notion that sophisticated technical prowess is a prerequisite. He remarks, “It is not very advanced. You don’t have to be a brilliant technical genius to do this,” emphasizing the accessibility of such nefarious tactics.
